The Proofreading Checklist
You've written your book, you've gone through the editing process, and you've had it laid out. You're so close to publishing, but you're not quite ready yet.
Now it's time for proofreading!
This checklist will guide you through the final steps to ensure your book looks polished and professional.
Here's what you get:
- 8 page guide and 6 page checklist for proofreading your own book - 14 pages total
- Google Doc format with clickable checkboxes and space for adding checks specific to your story
- an introduction to what proofreading is, and what it is not
- instructions on how to mark-up your changes in Adobe Reader
- a glossary of proofreading terms to help you and your designer communicate more clearly
- video guides for each step in the proofreading process, with examples from published books
This checklist is for writers who:
- have had their manuscripts edited and designed
- are working with a designer or checking their own layout
- want a professional-looking book but whose budgets can't stretch to professional proofreading
- are tasked with proofreading their own book or are wanting a friend to do it
"Deborah's checklist walks you through the process so clearly that authors who are totally new to publishing (like me), will have no trouble following along and benefiting from it."
- Matthew Tolzmann, author of Feces Navidad
This checklist is suited to many genres, including fiction, narrative non-fiction, memoir, history, travel and adventure, academic books, and popular science.
Not every section will apply to your book. If you've written fiction, you won't need to worry about checking a reference list or end notes.
This checklist is NOT for writers who:
- are still in the writing process or do not have a complete manuscript
- are still revising or editing their manuscript
